Spell Packet Construction

Don't laugh. You would be surprised how many people just don't get the whole spell packet construction thing. I have seen packets that leak seed everywhere and I've seen packets that would pass for a cutely wrapped golf ball. When I first joined Nero, one of my first questions was "How do you make spell packets?". After reading various forums and talking to a few people I was able to figure it out. I mean come on, it's not like it's rocket surgery. Anyway, I decided to put up a web based class on making spell packets.  This is for all you new spell casters who just don't understand what we mean by "Spell Packet".

Okay, let's start with supplies. Your going to need a few things before you get started. First, your going to need some material. Cotton works best, and stay away from anything shear. You don't want the filling poking through your material. I use a neutral color, cotton blend, that I find on the $2 rack at the local hobby store. You can get about 50-55 squares out of a yard, so a yard should do well to start. Your going to need to cut it into 5x5 squares when you get it home. So make sure you have good scissors.

Next, you need to go somewhere like Wal-Mart and pick up a bag of rubber bands and bird seed. Make sure the bird seed is for small birds and has no sunflower seeds in it. Larger seeds will poke holes in your packet and could possibly cause injury. Your also going to  need a saucer and and a tablespoon measureing device.

Once you have gathered all your materials and set them up, put on some good music because this will take a little while at first. After some practice you will be able to make these while sitting in front of the TV watching a movie.

Now, take a 5x5 swatch and place it in the center of the saucer. Then take a tablespoon of seed, leveled off, not rounded and pour it into the center of the swatch.

Now take up the corners and gather all the edges in, followed by a half twist.

Now, start wrapping a rubber band over the fat end of the packet. Not too tight. We're not out to through fast balls here. Your spell packet will keep a better rounded shape if you wrap from the fat end and finish with a few wraps around the tail. Your finished spell packet should be firm, but not hard. And after a few tries you'll have it down pat.

And like I said, you'll be cranking out spell packets like a pro before you know it.  As for how many? I usually make three times the number of packets that I have spell slots for. You'll be able to recover some, but some will get wet at night from the dew, and then the seed becomes hard as a baseball. I say keep a bag by your bed full of packets and you should be good to go.
